Cendol@Melaka.

After having Hassan Mee Rebus, we drove to town and then towards the reclaimed coastal highway to Cafe Li's for cendol.

Cafe Li's is located at 45, Taman Limbongan Indah, along the coastal highway at the junction of Tengkera and Tanjung Bidara.

A brand new row of double storey shophouses opposite of Hotel Bamboo Garden.

Bunting with a former Bukit Rambai Cendol sign adorned the shop front.

They also served ala carte Peranakan dishes.

Parking is OK.

Kedai Makanan Hassan Mee Rebus@Melaka.

After attending the Malay wedding reception of my grand niece Amy and Asri at Bukit Katil, Melaka we adjourned to nearby Taman Jaya Padang Temu@ Jalan Ujong Pasir for Mee rebus.

In the 70's, Hassan used to sell his Mee rebus on a mobile tricycle stall.

Now, this Mee rebus stall is more permanent and more accessible to his regulars and new growing customers.

It is a kampung house converted into a mini restaurant with sparse furnishings.

As we were late-there were no more cuttle fish to add to our Mee rebus but we were extremely satisfied with what we had came for.

Parking is OK.

Beggar Chicken@ Ban Heong Seng,Johor.

Beggar Chicken-the cooking is quite tedious- the herbs marinated chicken are wrapped in two layers of cake paper, a layer of thick brown grease proof paper, tied together, covered with red earth clay and left to cooked in a grounded charcoal fired kiln for hours.

Nowadays, restaurant that served Beggar Chicken are quite rare - it shall be a death to a  culinary delight if the art is not passed on to the younger generation !

Was in Johor for a holiday-found out on JOHOR KAKI's blog "here" there is one right in the heart of Johor Bahru.

What a great find !

Even my relatives did not know of it's existence.

Ban Heong Seng is family owned and located in an old bungalow house with about six tables at it's front porch.

A day reservation is needed.

Located just before Danga Bay-just after a row of hawkers stalls- turn left at a small junction-the  right one leads to the side entrance of the Istana- take the left turn and go uphill- the first house.

My bil KAM ordered Beggar chicken with other side dishes and the dinner turned out to be good as it's was the first time for him and his family while we have tried it in Selangor.

Thanks to my bil Kam.

Beggar chicken-full of , juicy, essence and nutritious herbal gravy-tender with aromatic taste and meat that detach easily  from the bone..

Beggar pork ribs with potatoes and carrot-meaty and chunky ribs-up a notch !.

Beggar pig's stomach and pig's tail with assorted Chinese herbs, wolfberries and mushroom-like the pig's tail which was a good combination .

Beggar.Tengirrri fish-debone with the skin in tact- stuffed with fish paste made from the scrapped fish flesh-deep fried served with sliced cucumber and fresh coriander leaves.

Fried Tang Hoon (glass noodle) with chopped Chinese long cabbage, celery, dried shrimps, shrimps and lean pork-well fried with some wetness.

Oyster rice wrapped in Banana leaf-glutinous and a bit sticky-fragrant with each bite.

Banyam(spinach) in a superior soup topped with deep fried shallot-leafy and tender..

Double boiled winter melon soup with snow fungus, red dates , wolf berries and chicken bits-a nutritious, invigorating clear and "ching"  soup.

Restotan Old Places@Johor.

Restoran Old Places, origins must be from Perak because they have branches in Ipoh, Bercham and Taman Ramai.

Here in Johor Baru, they are doing brisk business at Nusa Bestari, Skudai- a semi-new housing estate.

Their main signature dish are claypot chicken, braised chicken claws, claypot loh see fun (short fat rice noodle)......etc

As we were famished after a day out at Legoland, my bil Kam ordered two claypot of chicken, two plates of braised chicken claws, one big claypot of loh see fun and stir fried lettuce to go with the meal.

The Claypot Loh See Fun is worth a try as it is good-cooked much like the thick and  eggy Ulu Yam's Lor Mee.

All the dishes were polished off clean within a few minutes, that shows that it was a warm, nutritious and delicious meal.

Parking is OK.

Claypot Chicken rice-served piping hot and aromatic-with chicken thigh meat, lap cheong (Chinese sausage) and  a bit of  salted fish-the cooked rice are a bit wet but it became drier when left in the pot- well marinated chicken meat- the thinly sliced sausage and salted fish added extra flavor to it - overall a great and affordable meal-Rm13/

Braised chicken claws are a bit small in size compared with KL ones-might be claws from spring chickens-gelatinous and well braised but a bit salty-highly recommended -Rm6/

Location:22-24, Jalan Bestari 3/2,
Nusa Bestari, Skudai, Johor Baru.

Nasi Lemak Berlauk@Kg Senibong.

Does, Restoran Malam Indah Selalu @ Kg Senibong, Bandar Baru Permas Jaya serve the best nasi lemak berlauk in Johor Bahru ?

The best landmark to access the restaurant, is, on seeing Jusco Permas Jaya, at the traffic lights junction turn right and it will leads you there.

Located by the seaside and built on stilts, looks ramshackle but sturdy with a great view of Sembawag, Singapore.

Next to it, is a cluster of seafood restaurants known as Restoran Selera Senibong Seafood (RSSS) which we hope to try on our next trip.

There are fried chicken, rendang chicken, beef rendang, sotong, fried kembong fish.....etc to eat with your nasi lemak (coconut milk rice).

,

Fresh fishes, shell fishes - all ready to be grill, boil or cook to your order.

The seven of us had nasi lemak berlauk with fried chicken and rendang chicken (Rm6/plate) and side dishes like sambal baby sotong (squid), two deep fried kembong fish, a big chunk of sambal ikan pari (stingray), twenty skewers of chicken satay with a really tasty peanut sauce and cool limau kasturi juice drinks.

Nasi Lemak berlauk-Fragrant grainy coconut milk  rice served with French bean, fried egg, two slices of cucumber, papadom like cracker, fried and rendang chicken and hot, spicy and numbing sambal which perks up our palate-Village Park nasi lemak is much tastier.

Grilled to perfection Ikan Pari with an addictive spicy, sourish, lemongrass like sambal which combine well with the fresh and fleshy fish -5 stars !.

Location:Kg Senibong,
Jalan Persiarian Senibong,
Johor Bahru.

Big Tree Lin Kee (Chan Sow Lin Steam Fish Head)

As it's name implies, the stall is nestled under a big tree with lots of green foliage, sandwiched between the back lane of two rows of terrace houses.

The best landmark to access it, is the UCSI university, on the left side of Taman Connaught if you come from Petaling Jaya.

The place is quite cooling and is terraced and the floor are roughly cemented.

Plastic tables and chairs are the main furnishings.

The main dish is steamed fish head cooked in various styles.

Side dishes are stir fried vegetables, double boiled herbal chicken in coconut soup, steamed tofu with fish paste....etc.

Prices are reasonable.

Parking is OK.

Nam Yee Chicken wings-not well marinated but passable with red chillies sauce as dip-Rm10.50.

Soong Yee Thau-with fermented black bean sauce and lots of chillies padi-very, very fresh and smooth fine flesh-with a not too spicy addictive sauce-Rm25/

Steamed Tofu with fish paste-smooth and silky white tofu plus springy fish paste topped with freshly chopped spring onion-made this dish a winner-Rm10/

Stir fried "snake" long bean and brinjal in a sambal sauce with added onion and red chillies-the partially cooked brinjal spoiled the otherwise oily but tasty dish.- Rm8/
