Kafe Lin's@Melaka.

Six months ago, we had only cendol@ Kafe Lin's with a Melaka friend, Ruby, who swears
it was one of the best, around.

That time we did not get to try their authentic Peranakan mixed dishes ala mixed rice dishes style
because we were full from a great meal of mee rebus near Ujong Pasir.

This weekend, we arrived famished there at about 1:45pm after a hot and sweaty tour of Jonker Street and it's surrounding attractions.

All in we picked about eight dishes rich and spicy, all done Peranakan style.

The food is delicious and authentically cooked the way my mum used to cook for me.

 Parking is ample.

Fried chicken marinated with tumeric -crispy skin and tender and meaty.

Petai with onion and anchovies in hot and spicy sambal chillies paste.

Sea prawns/Squid sambal belacan chillies.

Assam Senangin chunks with ladyfngers and brinjal.

Stir fried sliced bitter  gourd with eggs.

Pongteh Chicken-just odd parts left, nevertheless the gravy goes well with rice.

Stir fried Spinach topped with deep fried shallots.

Fried eggs.

Cendol with kidney beans, gula Melaka, coconut milk......just nice and fragrant.

A great meal.

NICE SOUP GANG RESTAURANT.

On our way back from Genting, we dropped by Nice Soup Gang Restaurant located in Taman Daya (near FRIM) , Kepong for dinner.

The restaurant is two shoplots, partly air-conditioned with many antique grandfather's clocks gracing it's walls, tea leaves and tea paraphernalia for sale and glass aquariums filled with live fishes.

We ordered the usual dishes that we like to eat and service was fast.

Parking in the evening is OK.

The owner's collection of antique grandfather clocks.

CAPATI STALL -TAPAH

After the exit of the Tapah toll plaza from the NSE, we turned right at the traffic light junction and about 100m on our left is the Capati stall where we had our breakfast of Thosai, Nasi Lemak bungkus and some hot drinks.

This stall is run by a Punjabi lady with some lady helpers and the food dished out by her are visually mouthwatering.

She speaks fluent Cantonese and her customers are truly 1Malaysia.

The stall is open for breakfast and lunch only.

The front of the stall.

An arrays of food -many choices to tempt your taste buds.

Stir fried Ladyfinger (Okra)

Mixed Vegetables.

Lentils curry.

Sambal Petai (Stink beans) with Squid rings.

Deep fried Chicken cutlets-lightly batter with curry powder and fragrant curry leaves.

Making of Roti Canai (Indian crispy dough bread).

Nasi Lemak Bungkus-with toasted Peanuts, slices of Cucumber, hard boiled Egg and Coconut milk cooked rice-the Sambal chiiles with Anchovies was a bit sweet-anyway it satisfies our hunger pangs.

Thosai was soft with a hint of sourness, i prefer it to be more crispy-the dhall with sambal chillies was a good dip with it.

Milo O.

Teh tarik (Tea)

DELICIOUS DINNER 8

A series of home cooked dinner by my wife.

Stir fry petai (twisted clustered beans) with prawns and onions-many are put off by the stinking smell-it is a good diuretic-can lower blood sugar level.

Blanched Kai Lan (Mustard Green) with soy sauce-crunchy-simple and healthy dish.

Braised chicken with bitter gourd- meat was full of sweet black beans paste flavor-sliced bitter gourd was not bitter at all.

PETAI

The Petai tree is only found growing deep in the jungle. I was surprised to find the this plant growing by the road side in the suburbs of Section 17/11 and 17/4 junction, Petaling Jaya. It is also known as twisted cluster beans or stink beans. Some claimed that it can lower the sugar level in the blood.

Can grow to great heights in the jungle.

The flower pod.

The pod burst to become stalks of the Petai fruit.

Close up of the fruit.

It is very versatile, can be eaten raw, stir fry and (above)cooked with prawn, tamarind and chilies-can be pungent and slightly bitter.

DURIANS DURIANS

the durian's season are here again.this year the durian's crops
are bountiful and cheap. i don't know whether it is a coincidence
whenever the durians are in season the mangosteens follows suit.
durians are heaty and aromatic to us but pungent to other nationalities.
to balance off the heatiness we need the "coolness" of the mangosteens.
personally i prefer the kampung durians, no pesticides!
last sunday my wife and i drove to TAPAH in search of durians,
we arrived there and met up with her sister and had breakfast at
restaurant tong yoon, a coffeeshop cum hotel. it is a old and nostalgic
place with marbletop tables and wooden chairs. we had western
breakfast, nasi lemak and three hot drinks.total bill rm13.50.
then we head straight to kampung lubok katak, a village of chinese/
malay people.the air was fresh and cool because of the canopies
of trees.we were in luck as there were plenty of freshly collected
durians,mangosteens and petai.we bought about 30 durians
rm50/, 8 bunches of mangosteens rm25/ and petai rm30/
on the way out we dug up a young wild bamboo shoots by the roadside.
we enjoyed bargaining and tasting the various fruits.
some photos taken there.
