RESTAURANT WONG KEE

Today, lunchtime with my buddies, we went to Restaurant Wong Kee at Jalan Nyonya in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur. It is a typical China man corner lot coffee shop located near the Printer's Alley off Jalan Brunei Selatan. You will surely miss the shop and will not even give it a second glance. Their specialty are Hai Nam Roast Chicken, Char Siew and Siew Yok with rice. A sign placed near the stall boldly stated "Open only at 12.30 pm" and it was only 11.45 am, we were hungry like a pack of wolves. What to do? On further inquiry, the Roast pork (Siew Yok) will only be ready at 12.30 pm! Oh! never mind, as we were their first customer we placed an advance order for 3 strips of it. Meanwhile we had 1/2 a Roast Chicken (was tender, nothing special), a plate of Char Siew and 4 plates of rice to satisfy our hunger pangs. "Soup of the day" is free and for self service only! It was a rather expensive meal! Parking is Hell, have to do double parking.

Do not go too early-open only at 12.30 pm.

Siew Yok-ordered two plates-came hot- the first bite of the lean meat was tender and juicy-the fat was gelatin like, a melt in the mouth sensation then the crispy, crackling skin which I think, were well punctured with holes made with a nail like contraption before roasting to give it a "prawn cracker-like" bite to it-heavenly divine!

Siew Yok -well marinated and caramelized -tender and lean-no artificial red coloring as used in other places.

Chillies, garlic and ginger sauce-was fiery hot.

Rice was grainy and not too oily.

Total bill:rm83/.
Location:30, Jalan Nyonya, (behind Pudu Specialist Center-beside QQQ car accessories)
off Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur.

Looks great! I can see that the roasted pork would taste really good :) with all the fat and the very crispy looking skin. And the char siu looks red even without coloring. It isn't easy to make it red without coloring! I've tried it before and I've only gotten a red colored result only several times without adding color, which I don't do.

somehow restaurants with good food always makes people wait. maybe the waiting makes the customers more hungry then they order more!!!
