RESTORAN GAFAN-THE CLAYPOT RICE SPECIALIST

It has been raining cats and dogs in the afternoon, needs something warm and comfort for dinner. Restoran Gafan, "the Claypot Rice Specialist" opened for business just a week ago in Paramount Garden, Petaling Jaya. They have 10 varieties of Claypot rice and the banner outside proudly proclaimed they are the most famous Claypot rice in Taman Connaught, Cheras. It is a no fuss place with a minimalist decor with the usual white round and square tables and plastics chairs. The lady boss recommended their signature Claypot dishes. The eight of us ordered 3 big pot plus 2 small pots which were generously sized to the accompaniments of double boiled soup, a plate of lettuce and some in house made Toufo. It was indeed a hearty and wholesome meal and value for money too. We will given a 15% discount card for our next visit, will definitely come back to try their Prawn and Fish Claypot.

The front of the shop.

Food cooked in Claypot retains it's nutrients and aroma-this is Claypot Chicken with Chinese sausage - chicken meat was well marinated and tender to the bite while the sausage was meaty-the rice was grainy with the right amount of sauce like dark Soy sauce, Sesame oil and dashes of Chinese wine-garnished with chopped spring onion and red big onion-Fabulous taste!

Claypot Chicken with Rice wine-this is something special-full of wine flavored-tender chicken meat with the usual garnish.

Claypot Chicken with Salted fish - for the children-without the garnish-the Mui Heong salted fish added a salty and and fragrant aroma to it.

Claypot Chicken with Salted fish with the usual garnish and sauce, this was the best of the lot-yummy!

In house made Toufo with very finely chopped fillings-was soft and not so appealing with the first bite-dipped it into the sauce and chew on it longer for a distinct flavor.

Blanched Lettuce topped with garlic and oil-the only green of the meal.

Most of their soup are double boiled with Chicken parts and pork-came in stainless steel container. It was full of nutrients and good for rejuvenating our body-clear and tasty.
Above:Lotus root soup.

Watercress soup.

Old Cucumber soup.

Wow, all the soups and the claypot rice looks so fresh! It's interesting that they put the soy sauce in already for you as in my area they add it in front of your face and mix it or just give you a side of the sauce.

The meats on top of the rice look so good! It reminds me that I need to get some claypot rice soon...

Hard to get good and established Claypot Chicken Rice. They come and go. This one seems like an established brand.

I have a few cookbooks on Asian cooking but I find myself unable to use them because I can't buy the wonderful ingredients required. I wish I could purchase daikon radish and lotus root here! Not to mention about 20 other ingredients that seem so common in Asian cooking.

I'd kill for some Korean chili powder so I can make some proper kimchee.

I love your photos and descriptions of the food you eat.

The clay pots, are they stuck into an oven or fire or are they set inside something like a crock pot?
