Restoran De Maw.

Saturday lunch with my buddies-we went to Restoran De Maw a small and quaint Chinese restaurant located beside the Menara PGRM building in Pudu Ulu.

The interior Oriental design was a welcome change, with bright side windows-marble top tables and sturdy carved wooden chairs.

Photographs of the chef and his three gold medals tally are proudly displayed near the counter (the food must be good ! )

As it was a quick lunch we ordered two dishes with a complimentary bowl of "soup of the day"

Parking is OK-just beside the restaurant.

Herbal village Chicken served in an aluminium foil-was tender, firm and muscled-with crunchy black fungus, sliced mushroom/wolfberries-the broth was full of herbs and chicken essence flavors.

Mixed vegetable-mushroom / florets of broccoli & cauliflower / gingko /carrot / tau kan (soy gluten puff) / oyster mushroom in a smooth tasty gravy- fabulously good.
Complimentary soup-double boiled old cucumber with chicken claws came in a big bowl-well boiled.

RESTAURANT CHUAN KEE-HAKKA FOOD

Saturday lunch time with my buddies, today we ate at Restaurant Chuan Kee located a stone throwaway from the Menara PGRM in Pudu Ulu. From the outside, the restaurant looks like a house, on entering it, there was an altar with statues of deities, a young boy playing on a home computer and a aquarium filled with tropical fishes and a dining hall with about six dining tables-just like home! However, when we were ushered to a back section, there were more dining tables. This family run restaurant is fully air conditioned but the air was a bit stale and mushy. The place has a very comfortable feel to it and the staff were very nice and accommodating. The insulation was bad, was noisy when full. the food served are typical Hakka dishes like Kow Yok, Cha Yok, Yong Tau Foo, Steamed fish, chicken...etc. Prices are reasonable and parking is ample, an open area few doors away at Rm2/entry.

Clay pot Braised Lamb-the ribs was meaty and tender, a bit gamy would have been more flavorful if well braised.

Steamed Grass Carp (Belly section-the best part of the fish)-with coarsely chopped old ginger, Soy sauce and a dash of Sesame oil for added flavor-was fresh, smooth and fleshy.

Stir fried Sweet Potato Leaves with garlic-was thick, leafy and smooth (traces of lard oil).

Sea Prawn-cooked in sweet, sour sauce with bird's eye chillies-generous size prawns was fresh, juicy and succulent-watch out! for the fiery hot bird's eye chillies.

HAKKA FOOD (RESTAURANT CHUAN KEE)

This restaurant is an old establishment, i remembered, my father used to take us for lunch on weekend. The setting was simple and homely, air conditioned and is family owned. The owner even lives upstairs. What i like about this place is the friendliness, simplicity, cleanliness, the good food and an old ornate antique mirror on the wall. It was a former squatter house, now it had been renovated with cement walls and plank all round the shop. This part of Pudu Ulu was a notorious and thriving business center during the old day.s A word of advice: Do not park by the roadside, you will get a summon. There is a parking lot a few doors away (rm2/). This restaurant is located in PUDU ULU, if you come from Cheras Jusco, at the traffic lights junction of Menara PGRM go straight, the restaurant is on your right. Today the four of us ordered:

The antique ornate mirror-not for sale.

Sea prawns with preserved bean paste and soya sauce -the prawn's head was full of roe and the meat was flavorful, succulent and fresh.

Steamed ginger grass carp belly: the big chunk of belly portion was fine in texture and super fresh!

Clay pot braised mutton: full of thick gravy and the meat was soft gamy in flavor and odor but my friends KK and Steven loved it

Cha yok : braised pork belly with black fungus with the right amount of 5 spices which was absorbed by the meat, tantalizing!

Stir fry sweet potatoes leaves - fresh and the stem was fat and tender.
