POH LOONG SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

On the fourth day of the CNY festival, we had lunch at Poh Loong Seafood Restaurant in Teluk Intan, Perak, before proceeding to visit a relative's house. The restaurant is located near the traffic lights junction of Jalan Padang Tembak and opposite of a Chinese school-SRK(C) Chong Min. This lunch date was at the invitation of my b.i.l Peng and his family. Like most Chinese restaurant, Poh Loong is divided into two sections-open and air conditioning dining. They are one of the more established restaurant in Teluk Intan (20 years history)- caters for wedding dinner too! The food was tasty, generous in portions and a bit expensive for a lunch meal. Parking is ample and service was acceptable.

Steamed Garoper fish head garnished with sliced ginger, spring onion, carrots and light soy sauce lends a pleasant sweet taste to the fish-was fresh, smooth and fleshy-loves the meat around the fish's cheek and under the egg ball-rm46/.

Buttered Mantis prawns- some were filled with red roe-was crispy with a irresistible gorgeous buttery aroma-rm20/.

Stir fried beansprout with scallion, red chillies and salted fish-must tuck in when it's hot-crunchy and refreshing! goes well with all the other dishes-rm10/.

Golden Brinjal (Aubergine)- cut into chip sizes and deep fried then tossed with chicken floss-more suitable as a snack-rm15/.

Hot plate Japanese Toufu-came sizzling hot with a layer of egg omelette as the base and filled with shrimps and smooth, thick delicious gravy-rm20/.

Deep Fried Soft Shell Crabs-lightly battered, meaty and crispy-transported to gourmet heaven in a bite-rm52/.

Claypot of Assorted Seafood- had this dish for yesterday's dinner-this was better and filled with prawn, squid, fish maw, calm, sea cucumber and mushroom-lush and wholesome dish!-not overwheming-rm80/

FISH SANDWICH

I always like to eat sandwich (especially home made ones with fresh ingredients) for my breakfast, besides toasted bread with avocado and noodle soup. There were leftover from two chunks of Deep fried Tenggiri fish (Spanish Mackerel) from last night's dinner. So this morning, my wife made fish sandwich for my breakfast.

Shredded meat from the Tenggiri fish (Spanish Mackerel).

Finely chopped red onion, fresh lettuce and chopped red tomatoes.

Pita bread-heated up on both sides under low flame with a pan.

All the fresh and healthy ingredients stuffed into the Pita bread-the fish was a bit salty and rough in texture but was nutritious- oh! it was a mouthful!

SUN GUOCHOW BEER GARDEN IPOH (CHINESE BAR-B-Q KING)

After only the third day of the CNY festival in Tapah, Perak. The children were restless and craving for shopping malls. First stop, we went to Ipoh City, Jaya Jusco and later adjourned to Ipoh Parade. The girls could not resist the temptation of buying and ended up with more than what they planned. We skipped our lunch and and at about 3 p.m. hungry pangs set in, we drove around and ended up at Sun Guochow Beer Garden Ipoh, a stone throwaway from Ipoh Parade. There were three tables of family diners while the rest were filled with old uncles drinking beer (happy hours) served by Carlsberg girls. We ordered whatever that was recommended by the waiter of Chinese Bar-B-Q King and had a few glasses of fruit juices. While waiting, we noticed that there was a huge tree trunk right in the middle of the restaurant. It protruded through the ceiling, providing a cooling shades to the place. There is a stall selling Curry Laksa and another stall on the left corner, selling Roast Duck, Pork and Chicken rice. Well, what a big surprise! the food we ordered was not bad-passable!

The front facade- notice the big tree behind.

Fried Wan Ton Noodles with Beansprout, Choy Sam and Roasted Cuttlefish-noodles was springy and the aromatic Roasted Cuttlefish was special and mix well with the noodles-rm10/.

Deep fried Squid-lightly battered with curry powder-was crispy and chewy-rm15/

Stir fried Kang Kong (Water Spinach) with garlic-for some cooling remedy after all the CNY festival dinner-rm8/.

Fried Tang Hoon (Glass noodles)-lots of scallion, onion, beansprouts, eggs and sliced fish cake-not oily, quite a generous portion and tasty-rm12/

Kam Heong La La (clam)-does not look or taste like it, more like curry and turmeric powder La La-with bird eye's chillies to give it a spicy and hot flavor-La La was fresh with no traces of sand-rm15/.

RESTORAN TONNY

This CNY festival was full of invited dinner. Tonight my b.i.l. Kam and his wife Ying treated us to a dinner at Restoran Tonny, which is located along the Bidor to Tapah road, the restaurant is on the right, just before the Tapah Police Station. The single unit double storey shop was packed to the rim, with some diners having their meals, along the side walkway of the resstaurant. Restoran Tonny is a small and closely knit family owned restaurant helm by Chef Tonny. Their signature dishes are wild frog, eel, haruan (snakehead fish) and exotic venison if it's available. The hygiene of the place is acceptable and parking is a breeze. The food is delicious, great taste, good value and no fancy stuff, just plain straight forward style. No reservations is needed, first come first serve policy.

The front of the shop.

Chef Tonny (in white) with his assistant.

4 Styled vegetables-with 4 angled bean, okra, wild fern and petai-was stir fried with aromatic chillies shrimps paste- imagine, four different kind of texture and flavor when eating it-superb!- was not too spicy.

Sweet and Sour Pork-very, very, very crispy but too small in size-fragrant and full of tomatoes and vinegar flavor.

Clay Pot with Assorted Seafood-with generous sized prawns, sea cucumber, Shiitake mushroom and cauliflower-interesting mix-looks appetizing but was bland.

Steamed White Promfret-local variety-was fresh and fine in texture-no fishy smell-handsomely flavored with Grade A soy sauce and peanut oil adding a pleasant sweet taste to the fish.

Stir fried Wild Frog-with ginger and scallion-their signature speciality-was fresh, sweet and really fine in texture-one of my favorite dish-only available seasonal.

Stir fried Yau Mak-green and leafy but was old and a bit bitter in taste.

Kong Por Eel-stir fried with dried red chillies, scallion and ginger with a dash of Chinese "Hua Diao"wine and dark soy sauce-was sliced and de boned into bite size-texture was firm and springy with enough chew factor..

The children and their playful antics- assorted fresh fruits was on the house.

Signs of approval for a well done dinner!
